Insurance demands for fire mitigation may mean big changes in communitiescontributed by Scott Golden, Tree Farmer Insurance demands for fire mitigation ________________________ Task Force on Wildfire Insurance and Forest HealthGovernor Hickenlooper has ordered that a task force be created to study and present him with recommendations on wildfire insurance and forest health. A website has been formed that contains much of the information that the task force members are studying in order to form their recommendations. The Task Force is working to complete a Report by September 30th The recommendations presented to the Governor will affect everyone owning forested property or living in the wildland urban interface. ________________________ Virtual Tour-Small Scale Forestry EquipmentJoe Turner, an independent Fire Mitigation and Forest Health Specialist, has compiled a list of links to information on small scale forestry equipment for woodland owners and has been kind enough to share. _____________________________ Fire Injury in Conifers -- Some Useful LiteratureFolks, With the large number of fires along the Front Range over the last few years, it seemed like a good idea to survey the available literature on fire injury of conifers and methods for determining whether fire-injured trees will likely survive their injury. Attached above, is a list of scientific publications on fire injury for your information and use. Fortunately, many of the papers can be obtained online free of charge, especially those related to fire injury of ponderosa pine and Douglas-fir. For ponderosa pine, the single best paper is the one by Sieg and others (2006). For Douglas-fir, the best papers are by Hood and others (2007). The paper by Michaletz and Johnson (2007) provides a good discussion of how fires kill trees (there is a fair bit of physics in this one, intermixed with more general discussions).
